"...a fetus's taste experience in the womb may bias his or her later behavior - in this case, influencing food preferences." ("What's going on in there", page 176)
Judging from our very unscientific first four days of weaning, this quote is very true! :-) About a month ago, Li and I both thought that Min Yi was ready to try some solids, but we decided to wait until she was out of the hospital. Now that she's back to her usual self, we decided to have a go, and it was great!
We started out with rice porridge, and she LOVED it. She smacked and reached out for the next spoonful, gobbling it all down. Well, gobbling it all down... some went down her throat and some down her chin. Of course, we explained her enthousiasm for rice porridge by the fact that Li ate so much rice porridge while she was pregnant.
For three days, she's had her porridge twice a day so this morning I thought that maybe it was time try out something else. Mashed banana. Can't go wrong there, right? Well, as it turned out, Min Yi doesn't like banana as readily as she did rice porridge. When I gave her her first bite, she just made this ugly face. So I thought I'd try another small bite, but this time she gagged. Not a good sign, so I just let it be. I played with her a little bit until I thought maybe I should try another tiny bit. But I shouldn't have. She puked :-( Well, so much for banana this time! Back to porridge for lunch, and we'll try again later!
I went into the bedroom (Li had gone back to sleep) and told Li about the banana-ride and she just remarked "well, I didn't eat any banana during my pregnancy". Well there you go. So now my daughter will never eat banana? What about drop and raw herring? I'll keep you updated on the process of this experiment (no, I won't be feeding her drop or herring anytime soon).
The past week didn't start out very well. As I wrote in my last post, Min Yi was not happy at all and needed lots of reassurance that she would be fine. She's much better now: she sleeps well, eats well and is very happy in general. We've improvised and made her two nice chairs, one in the fontroom and one in the back. I've put pictures of both chairs in the "cast" gallery. Min Yi likes to sit in her chairs. It's a new experience for her and we can tell that she enjoys this new view of the world. Her position is getting better each day now as she learns how to sit properly. The cast doesn't seem to bother her at all.
Min Yi's happiness vanished quickly when "uncle Rick" dropped by last night. She did "the lip" and cried :-) Luckily, she changed her mind on him later, and even sat on his lap and ate his finger. In between, we managed to snap a quick one. She's not quite at ease here ;-)
I'm such a good citizen. I ordered a bunch of books and received them a few days ago. No more blaming me for the current sorry state of our economy, I'm guilt-free now! If any of them are worthwhile I will add a short description on my (newly added) book section.
